Play therapy is a specific style of counseling designed for younger children whose primary language is play. Children do not communicate like adults so play therapy offers children the opportunity to process thoughts and feelings through play themes that the counselor is trained to interpret. This video gives a brief introduction to play therapy according the the American Association for Play Therapy. Shamicka Cannon LMSW offers play therapy to children under the supervision of Katheryn McLendon LCSW. Parents can access additional resources at https://www.a4pt.org/page/ParentsCornerHomePag
EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation to reduce the intensity of emotion associated with a distressing memory and/or thought. EMDR is an evidenced based treatment for a variety of conditions involving past trauma. Katheryn McLendon LCSW is trained in EMDR-II and has completed extensive training in using this modality with a number of different treatment issues including anxiety, depression, acute stress and post traumatic stress, and shame. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the best researched modalities in mental health for multiple disorders. CBT looks at how our thoughts impact our feelings and behaviors. Dianna treats adults dealing with mood and substance use issues using CBT and Shamicka treats adolescents and school age children using CBT. Katheryn McLendon LCSW is foundationally trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
